Sit With It
In today’s busy world filled with continuous noise, we often find ourselves consumed by a swirl of content around us; scrolling through social media while watching TV at the same time, absorbing small fragments of information.
In the midst of all of this content overload, we don’t really allow ourselves time to sit with our feelings – our emotions that sometimes bubble up. These feelings can often be the root and indicator of so much in our life at any given moment, and yet are often ignored due to the lack of time spent on them.
I can recall a time when I was struggling in my life, and not just a small amount, I mean really lost sight of who I was and my own goals and desires. It was during this time that I received a piece of advice that changed my life. That advice was to sit with my feelings.
What?
Sit with my feelings?
Well, turns out, I had been ignoring them for a very long time because I didn’t want to acknowledge any of the hurt, pain, or just downright ugliness I felt inside because let’s be honest, that never feels good. But when I started to silence the world and noise around me and sit with these “friends” I had been carrying with me, that’s when I truly began to understand myself and began to develop my own self confidence and love for myself moving forward.
This certainly hasn’t happened overnight and continues to be an eye opening journey, but it’s one of self discovery and one that I’m truly proud of. I can honestly say now that I’m grateful for my experiences and hardships in the past because I’ve taken the time to sit and reflect and muddle through those tricky waters and feelings. I actually learned to appreciate them for all they had taught me.
I would challenge you to do the same. Whether you’re struggling or not – allow yourself a few minutes each day or each week to simply be and embrace the silence. You might be surprised at what you’ll learn about yourself along the way.
